With 388 beds it is the second largest of Duke Health's four hospitals and offers a comprehensive range of medical, surgical, and diagnostic services, including orthopedics, weight-loss surgery, women's services, and heart and vascular services.

Perform a variety of interpretation, translation and Medical escort services to assist non-English speaking patients receiving care within the Duke Health System. The department strongly prefers Spanish medical interpreter knowledge/experience.

Duke Regional Medical Interpreter department is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Monday–Thursday nights, 7 pm to 7 am.

• Participate as a neutral conduit of information between Duke staff and international or domestic patients/visitors.
• Ensure that information pertaining to outpatient services, hospitalization (advance directives, consents, diagnosis and prognosis, treatment plan, follow-up appointments, and health care education) is accurately communicated.
• Address and document patient questions/concerns per Risk Management directives; provide interpreter services and convey exact messages without subjective summarization.
• Provide required documentation identified by the International Patient Center; maintain accurate daily records of service requests and provisions; maintain timely documentation within the program database.
• Promote customer satisfaction; notify Supervisor of issues affecting patients or Duke staff.
• Participate in continuing education and competency training to enhance the professional role of International Medical Escort.
• Follow all policies and procedures related to process, service, and employee work rules; maintain confidentiality in all patient care matters related to non-English speaking patients/families/escorts.
• Participate in on-call coverage to provide interpretation/translation during non-business and business hours as assigned.
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

• Ability to work with diverse populations from various economic backgrounds and age groups.
• Ability to work as an effective team member in a fast-paced health care environment with varied customer service needs.
• Accurate and appropriate interpretation skills at all times.
• Current N.C. Driver's License with driving record suitable to Duke Van operations and corporate risk management.

Education
High-School Diploma or equivalent; successful completion of conversation/translation competency testing in secondary language; knowledge of medical terminology.

Experience
Previous experience in a health care setting preferred.
