Position Overview
Facility Maintenance Technician – Mechanical Trades – Boiler & Steam Operator (Pool) at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). This position supports the planning, repair, renovation, and maintenance of all NCCU facilities, with a primary focus on the steam and hot water producing and distribution plant.
Primary Purpose of PositionThe primary purpose of this position is to ensure the proper operation, maintenance, and repair of the steam and hot water plant ponsibilities include managing all boilers (currently 11), generators, fuel and chemical treatment systems, condensate, domestic hot water, and steam piping systems, and related equipment such as gauges, pumps, and blowers. The role requires continuous monitoring, inspection, and adjustment of systems to prevent malfunctions and maintain operation within set parameters.
Key tasks involve quality assurance, valve, pump, and pipe repair, gauge calibration, boiler repair and operation, chemical analysis, hydrostatic testing, troubleshooting, and problem solving. This is a key position for Utilities Services and Operations, providing after‑hours emergency and on‑call support.
- Working knowledge of plumbing systems, boiler operations, and applicable state and local regulations; ability to interpret complex work requirements from oral instructions, blueprints, sketches, and technical drawings.
- Skill in using electrical metering devices, diagnostic equipment, and maintenance tools; knowledge of Banner or equivalent enterprise systems and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel); ability to monitor budgets and track expenditures.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, take initiative, and complete projects through completion; exercise sound judgment and discretion; work weekends and special events as needed to support university operations.
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
