Position Overview:

The Research Support Technician assists in research and development, and pilot production activities involving metal powders and thermal spray coatings. The technician will be responsible for installations and proper operation of equipment, conducting experiments, and maintaining accurate records. This role supports research staff by preparing materials, following protocols, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Laboratory Support:
    • Prepare and maintain laboratory and small-scale manufacturing equipment and supplies.
    • Ensure cleanliness and organization of work spaces.
    • Dispose of hazardous and non-hazardous waste per safety regulations.
  • Research Assistance:
    • Conduct experiments under the direction of research staff.
    • Collect, document, and analyze experimental data.
    • Maintain detailed and accurate research records.
  • Equipment Maintenance:
    • Calibrate and troubleshoot laboratory instruments.
    • Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate repairs.
    • Follow safety protocols for handling chemicals and combustible materials.
  • Data Management:
    • Enter research findings into databases and generate reports.
    • Ensure compliance with data integrity and confidentiality standards.
  • Compliance & Safety:
    • Follow all safety procedures, including PPE usage.
    • Adhere to regulatory guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
    • Participate in safety training and emergency preparedness drills.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Work closely with research teams to support project goals.
    • Communicate findings and observations effectively.
    • Assist in writing and reviewing technical documents.

    Requirements

    Education & Experience:

  • Associates degree in a scientific or engineering field (Metallurgy, Chemistry, electrical engineering, etc.) or equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience in a research or manufacturing setting preferred.
  • Hands on experience in Plasma/HVOF/Wire-Arc coating applications preferred.
  • Skills & Competencies:

  • Quick learner with the ability to adapt to new systems, processes, and technologies.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow protocols, standard procedures, and safety guidelines consistently.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and data entry systems.
  • Effective communicator with excellent collaboration and teamwork abilities.
  • Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
  • Capable of lifting up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
  • Comfortable working in environments with exposure to chemicals and standard laboratory conditions.
  • Work Environment:

  • Laboratory setting with exposure to chemicals and combustible materials.
  • Requires adherence to safety protocols and PPE usage.
  • Regular interaction with research teams and technical staff.
