The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care support partner with the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The NA provides direct care to patients, assists with non‑direct patient care unit coordination, performs basic care and comfort standards, and supports RN/LPN with acutely ill patients. The NA follows all basic policies and procedures, practices medical asepsis, respects patient dignity, and communicates with the electronic health record.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for procedures; assist with manual procedures; obtain and record patient data; administer treatment and personal care procedures, including feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nail care, bed‑making, ambulation, enemas, skin care, and bladder elimination; participate in teaching activities; assist providers with examinations; take and record vital signs; perform fingerstick blood glucose testing; assist with admission, discharge, and transportation;
collect and conduct routine tests; maintain unit area and supplies; support professional development and staff development; may perform clean dressing changes for wounds over 48 hours old; perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.

Degrees, Licensure, and CertificationCurrently listed as a Nursing Assistant I with the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Service Regulation, with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect or misappropriation of property.
BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by the end of new hire orientation, typically during the first week of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesWorking knowledge of procedures and techniques for routine and special treatments to patients; sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health and safety precautions; organization and physical layout of the hospital; infection control procedures and safety precautions; ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking; ability to lift or move objects and patients weighing over 35 pounds with assistance or lift equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
ability to document and communicate relevant information using computer and/or paper documentation tools; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients and hospital staff; knowledge of principles and practices of providing non‑professional bedside patient care; pre‑employment physical capacity testing may be required.
