Overview:
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) provides direct patient care in neonatal units (birth through 2 years) within Duke University Health System. The NNP conducts physical exams, orders and interprets diagnostics, prescribes interventions and medications, and participates in leadership, research, teaching, and interdisciplinary teamwork to support excellence in patient care.

Job Summary

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) provides direct patient care services and performs medical procedures under the supervision of a supervisory physician in neonatal units, including Intensive Care Nurseries, Intermediate Care Nurseries, and Special Care Nurseries. The NNP collaborates with physicians, fellows, APP colleagues, nurses, and patient resource managers to develop treatment plans and monitor patient progress.

Job Duties And Responsibilities
  • Rround daily with the attending and/or fellows to assess, diagnose, plan treatment, set priorities, and evaluate outcomes with attention to effectiveness and cost efficiency.
  • Provide and coordinate clinical care for service-specific patients under the supervision of the hospitalist supervising physician or backup physician.
  • Collaborate with fellows, attending physicians, other APPs, nurses, and patient resource managers to formulate treatment plans and monitor patient progress.
  • Perform procedures within demonstrated competency and in accordance with scope of practice and credentialing guidelines.
  • Assess patients for changes in status and institute appropriate interventions; initiate emergency interventions as needed until physician support arrives.
  • Post-procedural stabilization and management; develop care pathways and guidelines in conjunction with the care team.
  • Communicate all pertinent patient information verbally and in writing to supervising MDs, nursing staff, patient resource managers, home health agencies, and other healthcare providers.
  • Document in the patient’s medical record all relevant data, including diagnostic results, treatments, patient condition and response, and communications with the supervising MD.
  • Prescribe and manage medications and devices, including controlled substances where applicable and permitted.
  • Provide education to patients, families, and staff; assess learning needs and document education in the medical record; promote culturally sensitive communication.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary quality improvement and research activities; apply evidence-based practice and contribute to standards of care and policies within area of specialization.
  • Provide expertise and resource information to clinicians, patients, families, and community regarding pediatric diseases, procedures, interventions, and conditions.
  • Maintain licensure and certification requirements and adhere to institutional standards of care.
  • Give daily handoffs to the appropriate attending, APP, or fellow at the end of each shift.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited MSN or DNP Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP); BLS and NRP mandatory before hire.
  • License: Current and unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with approval to practice as NP; valid Federal & State DEA licenses.
  • Experience: 3 years RN neonatal experience; 1 year NNP/PNP experience preferred.
  • Job Type: PRN / casual labor pool.
