Duke University Health System seeks to hire a Nursing Care Assistant I who embraces our mission of Transforming Lives, Transforming Care. Work Performed
The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient‑care support partner with the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and performs work as delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provides direct care to patients and assists with non‑direct patient care unit coordination, basic care and comfort standards, and knowledge of patient population needs. The NA also assists the RN/LPN in caring for acutely ill patients, practices medical asepsis, respects dignity, privacy, and cultural differences, complies with policies, responds appropriately to emergencies, maintains the patient/family environment, performs general unit upkeep, orders necessary supplies, and documents patient care in the electronic health record.
- Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures and provide manual assistance as required.
- Obtain and record patient data for medical records, notifying RN/LPN of information collected.
- Administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients (feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nail care, bed‑making, ambulation assistance, enemas, skin care, bowel and bladder elimination) and provide additional care as required.
- Assist with teaching activities, reinforcing instruction from RN or providers.
- Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations (positioning patients, changing non‑sterile dressings, weighing patients).
- Take and record vital signs, record I/O, apply ice bags, and report changes in patient condition.
- Turn and position patients and feed patients as necessary.
- Perform finger sticks for blood glucose testing, document results, and notify RN/LPN.
- Assist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients.
- Follow standard precautions and use PPE as required.
- Collect, deliver and conduct routine tests on patient specimens.
- Clean assigned area; stock and replenish supplies and equipment.
- Participate in professional development by maintaining required skills validation and attending educational offerings.
- Support development of other staff and formal learners.
- Perform cleaning of dressing changes for wounds over 48 hours old.
- Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.
Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of procedures and techniques for administering routine and special treatments.
- Knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, and basic health and safety precautions in a hospital setting.
- Knowledge of hospital organization and physical layout.
- Knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.
- Physical stamina for prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
- Ability to lift or move objects and patients weighing over 35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment.
