The RN First Assist will support the continuity of care for perioperative patients. The scope of practice includes preoperative patient care management, intraoperative surgical first assisting, and postoperative patient care management. The role will help expedite surgical productivity, provide second assist when needed, and serve as first assist to surgeons.
Job Duties- Provide preoperative patient management in collaboration with other healthcare providers, including evaluations, plan of care communication, and collaboration.
- Perform intraoperative surgical first assisting, including instrument handling, exposure, tissue handling or cutting, homeostasis, and suturing.
- Manage postoperative patient care in collaboration with other HCPs during the immediate postoperative period.
- Provide CRNFA experience and skill to the operating surgeon and comprehensive nursing management during the perioperative phase.
- Apply age‑specific standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines for adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients, including medication administration and care during altered states of consciousness.
- Incorporate cultural and developmental needs into the plan of care, collaborating with patient/family in a culturally appropriate manner.
- Demonstrate excellent communication, organization, and decision‑making skills.
- Maintain concentration and prioritization amid interruptions to ensure patient safety.
- Document patient care in the patient record per established standards.
- Participate in and promote Universal Protocol and time‑out procedures for every procedure.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members—surgeons, physician assistants, anesthesia providers, SPD staff, radiology, and other OR team members—to plan and deliver optimal patient outcomes.
- Engage in performance improvement activities, including data collection, analysis, and participation in the development of patient care delivery systems, standards, policies, procedures, and problem‑solving teams.
- BSN required with completion of an RNFA program that includes didactic and supervised clinical practice, based on AORN’s core curriculum for RNFAs.
- Certified Registered Nurse First Assist (CRNFA) licensure from the North Carolina Board of Nursing required.
- Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) required.
- BLS from the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
- ACLS & PALS from the AHA preferred; must obtain within 6 months of hire if not currently active.
- Three (3) years of experience in perioperative nursing required.
- Clinical knowledge of technology and treatment applications, scrubbing circulating skills, effective communication both verbally and written, and the ability to educate/train staff to comply with AORN standards.
