Clinical Nurse RN – Duke University Hospital 3100 Cardiothoracic Stepdown Unit

Department Profile:

The 3100 Cardiothoracic Stepdown Unit at Duke University Hospital is comprised of 31 beds and provides care for adult patients transitioning from the Cardiothoracic ICU. Patients require high‑acuity care for diagnoses such as pre/post cardiothoracic surgery, coronary artery bypass grafts, heart valve repair and replacements, aortic and aneurysm repairs, wedge resections, lobectomies, heart transplants, lung transplants, and ventricular assist devices. The environment is fast‑paced, developing critical thinking skills while offering opportunities for professional growth.

Full Time: 7am‑7pm / 7pm‑7am 3‑12‑hour days and nights rotating shifts

  • Straight shift option available after orientation for experienced nurses based on unit availability.

Job Summary:

As a Clinical Nurse with Duke University Health System, you will prioritize providing service while caring for the whole person in a patient‑centered atmosphere. You will deliver and supervise direct and indirect total nursing care, utilizing the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating) to achieve departmental goals. You will plan and provide advanced and/or specialized nursing care guided by the Duke University Health System Professional Practice model, participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects, or other health–related projects as assigned, and support nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, provide and document professional nursing care, using the nursing process, in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures under the supervision of the team leader or charge nurse.
  • Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
  • Assist other healthcare personnel in the delivery of patient care.
  • Maintain the environment of care, including equipment and material resources. Prioritize work organization and identify resources available to assist in completing components of care in a timely manner.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs, and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
  • Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Identify clinical or operational performance‑improvement opportunities and assist in performance‑improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the described work.
