Department ProfileThe 6300 Cardiothoracic Stepdown Unit comprises 31 beds. It provides care for adult patients transitioning from the Cardiothoracic ICU with diagnoses such as pre‑ and post‑cardiothoracic surgery, coronary artery bypass grafts, heart valve repair and replacements, aortic and aneurysm repairs, wedge resections, lobectomies, heart transplants, lung transplants, and ventricular assist devices. The fast‑paced environment develops critical thinking skills while offering opportunities for professional growth.

Full Time: 7 am‑7 pm / 7 pm‑7 am 31‑12‑hour days and nights, rotating shifts.
- Straight shift option available after orientation for experienced nurses, based on unit availability.
- Plan, provide and document professional nursing care using the nursing process, in accordance with physician orders and established policies and procedures under the supervision of the team leader or charge nurse.
- Delegate tasks and supervise activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers.
- Assist other healthcare personnel in delivering patient care.
- Maintain the environment of care including equipment and material resources; prioritize work organization and identify available resources to complete care in a timely manner.
- Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs, and seeking appropriate assistance or educational offerings.
- Support development of other staff and formal learners.
- Identify clinical or operational performance improvement opportunities and assist in performance improvement activities.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
- Graduation from an accredited Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program.
- All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are encouraged to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the BSN program within seven years of their start date.
Twelve months of appropriate clinical experience is required.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or CertificationMust have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina or compact licensure from a participating state. Must obtain NC RN licensure within 60 days of start date. BLS required but may be renewed during orientation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of scope of registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, and unlicensed staff.
