The position involves outpatient services and functioning as operative first assist, with no expectation of weekend or overnight hours.

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for the Department of Neurosurgery - Division of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at Duke Regional Hospital and Duke-affiliated Ambulatory Surgery Centers in and near Durham, NC. The APP will provide direct patient care in collaboration with the supervising physician to patients being evaluated for, and recovering from, spine surgery. The role includes outpatient services and functioning as operative first assist.
Primary hours will be Monday through Friday 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM with an average of 40 hours per week. Operative days start at 7:00 AM; clinic days begin later. Flexibility may be needed for operative days that extend past 5:00 PM and for patients with overnight stays requiring discharge the following morning. There is no weekend or overnight hour expectation.
Job Duties & Responsibilities- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to assist the physician in diagnosing medical and surgical problems and prescribing necessary treatment and services; record normal and abnormal data for physician review.
- Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, document in the patient s record, write progress notes, prepare workups and summaries, obtain psychosocial history, and develop therapeutic relationships with patients.
- Respond to patient inquiries via telephone or MyChart during work hours and consult with supervising physician as needed.
- Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain procedures to patients; arrange inpatient admission if needed.
- Carry out therapeutic procedures (e.g., wound care); monitor patient progress, report to supervising physician, and document progress; consult when progress does not meet criteria.
- Monitor operating schedule and follow up on pending studies and medical clearances as needed.
- May participate in basic science and clinical research projects; assist in teaching and training of students and residents; review and train lower-rated staff as appropriate.
- Nurse Practitioners:
Master s degree in Nursing from an accredited NP program. - Physician Assistants:
Accredited PA program completion;
Bachelor s degree required;
Master s degree strongly preferred.
- BLS required
- Nurse Practitioners:
Current or compact RN licensure in North Carolina; national NP certification required prior to or within 6 months of employment. - Physician Assistants:
Licensed in North Carolina and certified by the NCCPA.
- Ability to first assist is strongly preferred.
