Southpoint Surgery Center (SPSC), an affiliate of North Carolina Specialty Hospital, is a new Ambulatory Surgery Center located between Raleigh and Durham in the Durham-Southpoint area. SPSC will provide a differentiated outpatient delivery model focused on providing high‑quality, cost‑effective solutions for surgical and related ancillary care for patients. It is a multi‑specialty 22,298 sq. ft. facility accommodating Orthopaedics, Spine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Gynae, General, Urology, Plastics, Podiatry, Vascular, and Pain specialties.

The primary objective is to assure delivery of comprehensive, safe, cost‑effective and appropriate nursing care for patients across the age continuum (4 weeks‑geriatric), in accordance with established policies, nursing practice standards, and the Association of Operating Room Nurses. This position should develop excellent working relationships with hospital staff and accept guidance and constructive advice to improve performance. Candidates must have the ability to be flexible and positively accept new responsibilities.

Job Duties:
  • Provide individualized nursing care to the surgical patient, demonstrating an extensive knowledge base to support a variety of single and multi‑system illnesses and injuries. The RN controls the environment within the surgical suite and accepts responsibility for developing and coordinating a safe plan of care utilizing standards of practice and within the framework of policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate appropriate application of age‑specific standards, policies, and procedures and guidelines in caring for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients: follow age‑specific standards in administering medications based on patient’s age; follow age‑specific standards of care during altered states of consciousness related to analgesia, conscious sedation or anesthesia; use age‑specific standards, policies, and procedures to perform routine treatments and procedures appropriate for the patient’s age.
  • Incorporate cultural and developmental needs into the plan of care: collaborate with the patient/family in a developmentally and culturally appropriate manner, implement the plan of care, and demonstrate competency in nursing care according to established standards.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and high organizational and decision‑making abilities.
  • Demonstrate ability to concentrate on many detailed requests despite numerous interruptions and prioritize tasks to maintain patient safety.
  • Provide documentation of patient care in the patient record according to established standards of nursing care.
  • Participate in and promote Universal Protocol and time‑out procedure in every procedure.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team—including surgeons, physician assistants, anesthesia providers, SPD staff, radiology, and all other OR team members—to plan for the patient’s care and achieve optimal outcomes. The OR RN acts as a patient advocate, assessing needs throughout the peri‑operative experience and adjusting the plan of care accordingly while communicating with all team members.
  • Participate in performance‑improvement activities that involve collecting, analyzing data to identify quantifiable measures to maintain quality and promote desired outcomes, and participate in developing patient‑care delivery systems, standards, policies, and problem‑solving teams.
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing;
    Associate’s degree required; BSN preferred.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse from the North Carolina State Board of Nursing or a compact multi‑state license.
  • BLS from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required upon hire.
