Job Summary

The Duke Hospital Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP), which includes both Nurse Practitioner (NP) and/or Physician Assistant (PA), provides direct patient care services for critically ill pediatric patients aged 0‑21 with acute, complex, critical, and chronic illness across a variety of care settings. The APP may also care for aging pediatric patients beyond age 21 with a pediatric condition for a limited period.

Pediatric Critical Care medicine APPs will care for patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care unit (PICU), Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care unit (PCICU), and Pediatric Progressive Care Unit (PPCU). In addition, APPs provide critical care management on Rapid Response and Code blue teams. The APP exercises independent decision‑making in assessment, diagnosis, and planning of care, working in collaboration with supervising physicians.

The APP also contributes to education, consultation, research, and leadership within Duke Health System, organization, and profession.

Job Eligibility Requirements
  • Education: NP:
    Graduate of accredited MSN or DNP Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program. PA:
    Graduate of ARC accredited Physician Assistant Program;
    Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree preferred.
  • Certification: NP: PNP-AC or PNP-AC/PC (FNPs and PNP-PCs not considered). PA: PA‑C.
  • Licensure: NP:
    Current unrestricted RN license issued by NCBON with authorization to practice as an NP. PA:
    Current medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as a Physician Assistant. Both:
    State and Federal DEA unrestricted prescriptive authority.
  • Experience: Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant experience in a pediatric acute care clinical setting strongly preferred; 2+ years of ICU nursing experience also preferred.
  • Life support: BLS required; PALS required; ACLS recommended.
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Able to clearly articulate scope of practice and practice within guidelines.
  • Able to independently seek resources and collaborate to solve complex problems.
  • Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
  • Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform assessments, treatment, and follow‑up.
  • Able to use fine motor skills and record activities, document assessments & interventions, prepare reports and presentations.
  • Able to use computer and learn new software programs.
  • Able to provide leadership in clinical area and meet organizational goals.
  • Able to navigate the hospital and DUHS to provide clinical expertise to specific patient populations.
  • Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking with ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds.
  • Able to remain focused and organized.
  • Able to work collaboratively with all levels of personnel.
Job Hours

Rotating 12‑hour shifts to provide 24‑hour/day 7‑day/a week coverage. Schedule may be modified by the clinical or leadership team when needed.
