The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient‑care support partner with the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and performs work delegated by the RN or LPN. The NA provides direct care to patients and assists with non‑direct patient care unit coordination. The individual in this position is expected to perform basic care and comfort standards and to have knowledge of the patient population needs in the assigned work area.
In addition, the NA is expected to assist the RN in the care of acutely ill patients, practice medical asepsis, respect patient dignity and privacy, and respond appropriately during emergency situations. The NA also maintains the patient/family environment, performs unit upkeep, orders and maintains unit equipment, and orders supplies as needed. Accurate verbal and written communication and documentation in the electronic health record are required.
Clerical duties such as preparing, maintaining, and processing patient, unit, and hospital data are also performed. Individuals in this role are typically scheduled for NCA I shifts at minimum 25% of the time.
Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for procedures and provide manual assistance. Obtain and record patient data for medical records, informing RN/LPN of information collected. Administer personal care procedures: feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nail care, bed‑making, ambulation assistance, enemas, skin care, bowel and bladder elimination. Reinforce RN‑instructed teaching. Assist in physical examinations by positioning patients, changing non‑sterile dressings, and weighing.
Take and record vital signs, record intake and output, and apply ice bags. Note and report changes in patient condition. Turn and position patients, set up and feed patients, provide fresh drinking water. Perform finger sticks for blood glucose testing, document, and notify RN/LPN. Assist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients. Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.
Collect, deliver, and conduct routine tests on patient specimens. Clean assigned area; stock and replenish supplies and equipment. Engage in professional development and maintain required skill validation. Support development of other staff and formal learners. May also change clean dressings for wounds over 48 hours old. Perform clerical tasks in the patient care information system: acknowledge orders on EMR task list, verify printouts, input verified orders for diets, treatments, nursing services, equipment, and diagnostic tests.
Assemble and maintain patient charts from admission through discharge. Prepare and upload paper documents into the electronic medical record (EMR). Navigate EMR, access patient information, generate reports, schedule appointments, and manage task lists. Assign nursing staff communication systems. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of procedures and techniques for routine and special treatments; sanitation, personal hygiene, basic health and safety precautions; hospital organization and layout; infection control procedures; physical safety. Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking, and to lift or move patients over 35 pounds with assistance or lift equipment. Ability to follow oral and written instructions; document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper tools;
establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and hospital staff. Pre‑employment physical capacity testing may be required.
