Overview
The City of Greensboro seeks a Police Chief to serve as the community’s principal public safety leader. The Chief will set a clear strategic direction for the Greensboro Police Department while maintaining strong day-to-day operational performance, with an emphasis on transparency, fairness, and community partnership. The successful candidate will lead with courage, integrity, and compassion, while expanding practical innovations, strengthening technology and systems, and advancing training and professional development.
The Chief will work with residents, community organizations, service providers, and regional partners to reduce crime, build trust, and address public-safety issues such as homelessness, substance use, and mental health needs.
Greensboro, NC is the third largest city in the state, located in the Piedmont Triad region. It covers about 140 square miles, with just over 307,000 residents. The city offers diverse neighborhoods, historic districts, higher education institutions, parks, cultural centers, and a vibrant downtown.
About The OrganizationThe City of Greensboro operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The Police Department is CALEA-accredited and manages patrol, investigations, community policing, grant management, policy development, and interagency collaboration. The Chief reports to the City Manager and oversees a department of about 651 sworn officers and 126 professional staff, with a budget of over $109M. The department comprises the Office of the Chief, Patrol, Support, Investigative, and Management Bureaus.
Responsibilities- Provide strategic leadership and direction for the Greensboro Police Department; ensure safety and well-being of the community; uphold the department’s mission and vision; promote a culture of transparency, equity, accountability, and community partnerships.
- Lead operations and administrative functions, including patrol, investigations, training, policy development, and collaboration with city leadership, elected officials, and community partners.
- Build a culture that emphasizes officer wellness, professional development, ethics, and accountability; balance enforcement with community trust and partnerships.
- Engage with residents, organizations, service providers, and regional partners to reduce crime and address public-safety challenges such as homelessness, substance use, and mental health needs.
- Embrace modernization: adopt innovations, strengthen technology, and invest in training and professional growth.
- Reduce violent and property crime, improve traffic safety, and address homelessness-related concerns while maintaining fair and respectful policing.
- Rebuild trust and advance equity by reducing disparities, enhancing transparency, and promoting visible community engagement.
- Strengthen responses to homelessness, mental health, and substance-use issues through expanded partnerships and co-response options.
- Align staffing and deployment with Greensboro’s growth, ensuring effective resource use and clear communication during reform and enforcement efforts.
- Improve internal culture by strengthening accountability, communication with frontline staff, succession planning, and officer wellbeing during organizational change.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive law enforcement experience and 5–7 years of cross-functional, administrative, and command experience (Captain or higher).
- BA/BS degree required; master’s degree highly preferred; executive law enforcement training (e.g., FBI National Academy, SMIB, FBI LEEDA, Administrative Officers Management Program) preferred.
- Knowledge of state transfer rules for NC; ability to obtain required certifications; strong understanding of budgeting, grants, and resource management is expected.
