Be You.

Staff & Labor Relations is looking for a Senior Consultant to join our team. In this role, you’ll serve as a trusted expert and advisor to leaders and employees across both the University and Health System. You’ll be the person managers turn to when they need guidance navigating sensitive employee issues, interpreting HR policies, analyzing labor relations matters, or resolving workplace challenges.

Every day, you’ll use your knowledge of labor laws, collective bargaining agreements, and HR practices to help leaders make sound decisions and foster a positive, equitable, and compliant work environment. You’ll investigate concerns, recommend solutions, and influence organizational practices by spotting trends and helping design proactive interventions. You’ll also have the opportunity to support ADA accommodations, guide FMLA compliance, and advise on disciplinary actions to ensure fairness and consistency.

If you enjoy meaningful problem‑solving, collaborative partnerships, and work that directly strengthens the employee experience, this role puts you right at the center of shaping Duke’s workplace culture.

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, higher education administration, or related field.
  • Five years of HR management experience in a complex, service‑oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in labor laws, collective bargaining, HR policy, and employee relations practices.
  • Strong leadership experience and the ability to build effective networks across an organization.
Preferred Qualifications
  • HR experience in a healthcare and/or research setting.
  • Ability to analyze trends, develop training, and recommend policy or program enhancements.
  • Experience supporting ADA accommodations, FMLA interpretation, and conflict resolution.
Other Requirements
  • This role includes on‑call responsibilities on some weekends and holidays due to support for both University and Health System operations.
  • Onsite. Work is performed on‑site or at a designated assignment location.
Be Bold. What You’ll Do
  • Advise and guide managers on employee issues by interpreting HR policies, procedures, and labor laws to support consistent and responsible decision‑making.
  • Investigate and resolve labor relations matters, serving as a representative during grievances, hearings, and related meetings.
  • Identify organizational trends and recommend policy improvements, training, and proactive interventions to address systemic issues.
  • Participate in ADA and FMLA processes, ensuring compliance and helping determine appropriate accommodations.
  • Support strategic HR initiatives such as employee engagement programs, multicultural awareness efforts, and organization‑wide projects.
