Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The NCCU Department of Environmental Health and Safety ( EHS ) helps facilitate the University’s mission of research, teaching and service by ensuring health, safety, emergency management, risk management, and regulatory compliance. The group enables and empowers NCCU to adopt a culture of pride and professionalism in which innovation, discovery, and positive change are fully supported by safety professionals.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist develops, implements, and administers comprehensive environmental health and safety programs. This position ensures NCCU operations, including research and instructional laboratories, meet all OSHA, EPA, NCC DHHS and DOL, and other applicable governmental laws and regulations. Doing so includes: drafting, revising, and implementing policies and procedures; developing internal specifications for new operations; and monitoring existing operations and implementing risk minimization programs.
The position’s primary mission is to maintain a safe working environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Serves as resident expert and authority on all occupational health and environmental health matters. Must possess working knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations and be able to maintain compliance in applicable areas and EHS programs.
- Ability to develop and implement a comprehensive EHS program. Program elements and tasks include policy and procedure planning and development, compliance, and annual reports.
- Proficient in creating, tracking, and completing short- and long-term departmental goals, objectives, and strategic planning initiatives to ensure compliance.
- Adept at developing and implementing effective communication strategies related to the EHS program with internal and external stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
- At least three years of experience working in areas of Occupational Health, Indoor Air Quality ( IAQ ), and/or Industrial Hygiene (IH), preferably at a higher education institution. Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, national standards and accepted best practices relating to Occupational Health, IAQ, and IH. Substantive expertise and experience in evaluation and control of hazardous conditions and the development of EHS programs to improve safety, workplace environments, as well as training others on how to keep and maintain safe and healthy work areas.
Excellent presentation and training delivery skills and strong written and verbal communications skills required.
