Behavioral Health Therapist – Duke Primary Care – Heritage Pediatrics
Join Duke University Health System as a licensed behavioral health therapist focused on pediatric and primary care patients.
Responsibilities- Provide psychosocial assessments of patients and families to identify emotional, social, and environmental strengths and problems related to their diagnosis, illness, treatment, and/or life situation.
- Formulate, develop, and implement a comprehensive psychosocial treatment plan using appropriate interventions—including crisis intervention, individual, marital, family, and group therapies.
- Screen, diagnose using DSM nomenclature, and treat mental health and/or substance use problems.
- Participate in on‑call or after‑hours coverage as needed.
- Provide consultative services to health‑care team members within scope of care definitions.
- Maintain a current working knowledge of relevant medical/legal issues impacting patient care.
- Educate patients and loved ones about adaptation to diagnosis, illness, treatment, and life situation.
- Participate in multidisciplinary health‑care teams and provide leadership as the clinical perspective.
- Offer teaching and training for staff and faculty.
- Contribute to the academic mission through academic activities.
- Maintain knowledge of community agencies and resources.
- Document assessment, plan, interactions, and interventions per department, hospital, and health‑system guidelines.
- Maintain records in accordance with policies.
- Attend staff, committee, department, and administrative meetings.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Stay current with license requirements and pursue further job‑related knowledge.
- Adhere to onsite and hybrid availability policies as outlined by supervisor.
- Adherence to licensing board practice standards and ethical guidelines.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Solid knowledge of clinical practice and psychopathology.
- Proficiency with a range of therapeutic interventions.
- Ability to recognize when to refer or elevate care.
- Autonomous, self‑directed work style and flexibility in diverse assignments.
- Conflict resolution skills.
- Proficiency with Electronic Health Record systems (Epic preferred).
- Ability to help implement department, hospital, and DUHS initiatives.
- Master’s degree in human services or related field from an accredited institution; doctorate recognized.
- Two years of outpatient psychotherapy experience as a fully licensed autonomous clinician.
- Preferred experience in a medical setting or team‑based community program.
- Active licensure as a licensed LCSW, LMFT, and/or LCMHC. LCAS (secondary license) preferred.
