Under the guidance of the Director and the Clinical Director, the Staff Social Worker will provide advanced clinical and outreach services to Duke students in a fast-paced, high-demand university environment. This position demands a high level of independent work, performing complex intake evaluation, acute crisis interventions, and short-term therapy to a diverse student population provider's work will be guided by a commitment to serve the Duke University students by providing timely and culturally responsive clinical services.
This role requires a commitment to holistic student well‑being and an openness to innovative mental health service delivery models. Successful candidates would be proficient in providing meaningful CAPS services and have a passion for promoting overall student wellbeing. The individual must be a strong generalist who can provide multimodal treatments and understands the unique developmental stages and mental health concerns of college aged student population.
Position Duties Direct Services - 60%
- Provide a range of clinical services, addressing diverse needs, utilizing appropriate theoretical approaches, and recommending sound treatment models.
- Provide triage, crisis care, and clinical consultation to all Duke students, presenting with acute distress. Assess, deescalate, support, and make appropriate treatment referrals.
- Conduct initial intakes, determine and recommend treatment plan, and provide ongoing therapy services. Provide single session therapy, as requested.
- Assist students in developing coping skills and tools that will allow them to maintain emotional, physical, social, and environmental, relational wellness.
- Initiate and facilitate group therapy services that may include process, support, or skill-based spaces.
- Develop and facilitate outreach and workshops on various mental health and wellness topics, placing priority on expanding service access for all students.
- Participate in campus‑wide prevention efforts
- Administers and interprets limited assessment measures
- Organize, coordinate, and provide supervision and didactic seminars to master's level interns.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with state laws, ethical guidelines, and per CAPS policies and procedures.
- Utilize Electronic Medical Record System to maintain client records in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
- Coordinate referrals for students who need to be referred to services outside of CAPS.
- Serve as the liaison to university departments to provide consultation and training to promote integrated support services.
- Work collaboratively and respectfully with the internal and external colleagues.
- Provide consultation to campus partners, families, and community providers to coordinate student care.
- Follow agency policies and procedures consistent with state mental health statutes, ethical guidelines, best practices, and HIPAA.
- Participate in the on‑call rotation for after‑hours emergency services.
- Attend weekly staff meetings, clinical consultation team meetings, CE presentations, and biweekly supervision meetings.
- Serve on committees, as assigned by the CAPS leadership.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in college mental health as well as to maintain an active license. Attend local, regional, and national conferences, as time permitted.
