Department Profile:
  • The Endoscopy Unit at Duke South Clinic is a procedural hospital-based clinic with 7 procedure rooms and 20 prep and recovery bays, caring for an average of 50 patients/day. This area has an advanced GI program. Our team is committed to delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time.
Work Hours &

Shifts:
  • 4-10 hour shifts per week, on call required. On call consists of weekends and holiday rotations; weeknights are optional.
Preferred experience:

Experience in Med/Surg, Operating Room, PACU, ICU, Endoscopy, and/or Emergency Department is preferred but not required, for a high volume, high acuity endoscopy and pulmonary procedure unit. Procedures include general GI, pulmonary, and interventional procedures. Moderate sedation and strong IV skills are beneficial.

Job Summary:

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care. The CMA performs routine administrative and patient care supportive duties in a medical practice, assisting medical and nursing staff in examinations and treatments, and ensuring smooth clinic operations.

Administrative Duties:
  • Answer telephones
  • Greet patients
  • Update and file patient medical records
  • Fill out insurance forms
  • Handle correspondence
  • Schedule appointments
  • Arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services
  • Handle billing and bookkeeping
Clinical Duties:
  • Assist staff with taking medical histories, recording vital signs, explaining treatments, preparing patients, assisting during exams and procedures, collecting specimens, performing basic tests, disposing of supplies, sterilizing instruments, promoting patient understanding, preparing/administering medications, drawing blood, and preparing patients for tests and procedures.
Required Qualifications at this Level:

Education: Level I — Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred; high school or GED required. Levels II & III — Graduation from an accredited program strongly preferred; high school or GED required.

Experience: Level I — No experience required. Level II — At least 1 year of clinical experience. Level III — At least 3 years of clinical experience. One year of experience may be credited for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting.

Degrees, Licensure, and Certification: Levels I-III require certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA, and BLS certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Good customer service, ability to follow instructions, heavy lifting capability, sterile techniques, treatments, sanitation, infection control, age-specific competencies, clinic prep, documentation, effective communication, typing skills, medical terminology, and independent resource seeking skills for Levels II & III.
