Job SummaryThe Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, providing direct patient care and administrative support in a high‑volume Cancer Center clinic. The role includes clinical duties such as taking medical histories, recording vital signs, explaining procedures, assisting with examinations and procedures, performing basic laboratory tests, and documenting in the patient record. Administrative responsibilities include greeting patients, answering phones, scheduling appointments, managing referrals, handling insurance paperwork, billing, and maintaining supplies.
Responsibilities- Take medical histories and record vital signs.
- Explain treatment procedures to patients.
- Assist medical and nursing staff during examinations and procedures.
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens.
- Perform basic laboratory tests and EKGs.
- Remove sutures/staples, change dressings, and promote patient/family education.
- Dispose of contaminated supplies and perform instrument processing and sterilization.
- Telephoning prescriptions and preparing medications as directed by a physician.
- Authorize drug refills and administer medications.
- Greet patients, answer telephones, and schedule appointments in Maestro Care.
- Check out patients, arrange hospital admissions, and handle laboratory services.
- Maintain and file patient medical records, complete insurance forms, and manage billing and collections.
- Aquire and order clinical and clerical supplies.
- Participate in clinic committees and liaison activities such as Joint Commission and falls prevention programs.
Good customer service skills and ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Heavy lifting and ability to transport stretcher and wheelchair patients.
Knowledge of sterile techniques, procedures for administering routine and special treatments, infection control, and basic health and safety precautions.
Experience in a medical assistant role with emergency or outpatient setting preferred.
Ability to document and communicate pertinent information and establish effective relationships with patients and staff.
EducationGraduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program (CAAHEP/ABHES) strongly preferred. High school or GED required.
Experience0–3 years of clinical experience:
Level I – No experience required;
Level II – 1 year;
Level III – 2 years;
Level IV – 3 years in a clinical setting.
- Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA‑CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required.
- BLS required.
- Must meet all requirements of the Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA/RMA) Ladder Program for Levels II–IV.
