General Description of the Position

The Surgical Technologist (ST) assists in the preparation and care of patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics, working under a professional nurse. The ST applies sterile technique, understands human anatomy, surgical procedures, and uses technology to support surgeons in invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

Level I – New Graduate (≤18 months experience)

  • Perform all responsibilities while demonstrating Service Excellence toward patients, physicians, peers, and other departments.
  • Show eagerness to learn, adapt to changes, and progress toward Level II.
  • Establish and maintain sterile field and ensure team stays sterile.
  • Prepare the operating room with appropriate instrumentation, equipment, and supplies.
  • Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts accurately.
  • Maintain technical skills across the patient age spectrum.
  • Take calls and rotate shifts per RN direction.
  • When serving in an ambulatory setting, prepare patients for examinations, assist physicians, collect lab specimens, reinforce post‑operative instructions, and assist with patient calls under supervision.
  • Schedule and post surgical cases and coordinate complex scheduling when needed.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Must advance to Level II within 18 months.

Level II – Advanced

  • All Level I duties plus: assist in teaching newly hired and student technologists.
  • Serve as a role model for new employees.
  • Independent maintenance of sterile field and anticipation of team needs.
  • Apply instrument knowledge across multiple cases, demonstrate appropriate case preparation, and correct deficiencies at the case level.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Adhere to unit, hospital policies, regulatory standards, and patient safety goals.
  • Reinforce safety practices in the operating room and hospital.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
Required Qualifications Education
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or possess an accredited Surgical Technologist certification (NCCT or NBSTSA).
  • Or completed an appropriate US Military Surgical Technology training program.
Experience
  • Level I:
    Entry level for new graduates or 0–18 months experience.
  • Level II: 6–12 months full‑time surgical technology or relevant military experience.
Licensure & Certification
  • Both levels:
    Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Adapt to unit changes.
  • Work efficiently under pressure in a stressful environment.
  • Apply anatomy knowledge and instrumentation to anticipate surgeon needs.
  • Set priorities and respond to life‑threatening situations.
