Primary Function of the UnitThe primary purpose of the University Police Department is to protect the lives and property (real and personal) of all personnel and visitors who frequent the campus. This unit must enforce all applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as the university rules and regulations. In addition, this unit must patrol and secure the grounds of North Carolina Central University, respond to calls and/or complaints, perform preliminary investigations of criminal and conduct incidents, record and refer complaints, and complete and file reports on all incidents.
PrimaryPurpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to protect the lives and property (real and personal) of all personnel and visitors who frequent the campus. This position effectively oversees, accounts for, and secures state property, maintains a safe environment, assists and notifies the police department of upcoming events that would critically impact the North Carolina Central University Community and Police & Public Safety Department.
This position reports to the Field Operations Commander.
- Knowledge of criminal and traffic laws to enforce violations.
- Knowledge of investigative techniques and case preparation for routine traffic and criminal cases.
- Knowledge of standard law‑enforcement equipment, its care, and safe use according to Department General Orders.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Access) applications.
- Ability to perform community policing.
- Ability to complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program and become certified by the State of North Carolina through the North Carolina Criminal Justice and Training Commission.
- Ability to work independently with little or no supervision and take initiative to see projects and assignments through to completion.
- Analytical and organizational skills, including written and oral communication and editing skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of individuals in a high‑pressure environment.
- Ability to work flexible schedules.
- Interpret and analyze information to make necessary decisions; exercise judgment and discretion in problem‑solving.
