Description
We are seeking a Scientist I – Purification Sciences to support downstream process development activities for a growing biopharmaceutical pipeline. This individual will be part of a collaborative technical operations team responsible for developing, optimizing, and scaling purification processes for biologic molecules, including monoclonal antibodies and bispecific antibodies.
The role is highly hands‑on and execution‑focused, with primary responsibilities centered on laboratory‑scale chromatography and filtration experiments, along with associated lab preparation, documentation, and cross‑functional collaboration. Opportunities may also include support of process scale‑up and pilot‑scale activities.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare buffers and solutions to support downstream purification experiments
- Calibrate and maintain pH and conductivity meters and other routine lab equipment
- Execute chromatography experiments using AKTA systems (AKTA Avant experience preferred)
- Perform protein concentration measurements and analytical sample preparation
- Execute tangential flow filtration (TFF) experiments; high‑concentration TFF experience is a strong plus
- Perform viral filtration and other normal‑flow filtration operations
- Collect, label, and submit samples to analytical teams for testing
- Document experimental work in compliance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP)
- Analyze process data and contribute to technical reports and summaries
- Collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams, including upstream, analytical, and pilot/scale‑up groups
- Support a fast‑paced laboratory environment by managing multiple experiments in parallel
- Bachelor’s degree with 4+ years of relevant industry experience, or
- Master’s degree with 2+ years of relevant industry experience, or
- PhD with relevant hands‑on laboratory experience

Skills & Qualifications
- Hands‑on downstream purification experience for biologics (mAbs, bispecifics, or similar modalities)
- Practical experience operating AKTA chromatography systems
- Tangential flow filtration (TFF) and filtration process experience
- Strong understanding of buffer preparation, solution chemistry, and lab fundamentals
- Experience working in a regulated or GDP‑compliant laboratory environment
- Ability to troubleshoot experiments and adapt to changing priorities
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
- Comfortable working in a dynamic, team‑oriented biotech setting with shared ownership of lab responsibilities

Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Durham, NC.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00/hr.
