Develop your engineering career at JLL! The Critical Environments Operating Engineer supports operation, inspection and maintenance processes of critical mechanical building equipment and systems as part of an engineering & facilities team in the Raleigh/Durham Metro area.

Location: Durham, NC 27703

Schedule: On-site, 2‑36 hour weeks a month (3‑12’s) and then 2‑48 hour weeks a month (4‑12’s)

Shift: Thursday‑Friday‑Saturday Every other Wednesday, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM

Reporting To: Critical Environment Chief Engineer

Pay Range: $33.61 – $37.98 / hr

• Operate and maintain critical data center infrastructure, equipment, and systems.
• Deliver best practice systems and problem resolution on all data center electrical and mechanical infrastructure (UPS, MV electrical systems, generators, cooling systems, etc.).
• Maintain, monitor, and perform preventive maintenance to keep building systems at 100% uptime, including fire/life safety, HVAC, chillers, CRAC/CRAH, plumbing, controls, lighting, UPS, ATS, STS, PDU, generators, power distribution, transformers, and hot water systems.
• Monitor operations, adjust and maintain refrigeration, chilled water, air‑conditioning equipment, boilers, ventilating and water heaters, pumps, valves, piping, filters, and other mechanical/electrical equipment.
• Record readings and adjust equipment to ensure proper operation.
• Analyze system operations, diagnose problems/malfunctions, and take corrective action.
• Comply with departmental policy for safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
• Maintain a clean and safe workplace.
• Learn and understand the data center site to manage incidents and events that risk critical systems.
• Manage work orders, including CMMS, vendor management, and customer‑facing tickets.
• Follow emergency escalation procedures.
• Work shifts to support 24×7 data center operation and enable flexibility in work hours to cover other shifts.
• Provide on‑call emergency support as required.

• Frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, stooping, and working/extending overhead.
• Walk in large, campus‑like settings.
• Lifting minimum 50 lbs.
• Climb stairs and navigate rooftops to access equipment.
• Use ladders up to 30 ft and work from heights.
• Climb ladder with 300‑lb weight limit.
• Work different schedules, holidays & weekends, and after‑hours site emergencies.
• Cover PTO shifts.

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• 2+ years of hands‑on experience operating and maintaining critical infrastructure, equipment, and systems.
• 1+ year experience with UPS, emergency generators, switchgears, and chiller plant equipment.
• Valid state driver’s license.
• Successful background, drug/alcohol, and MVR screening prior to employment.
• Completion of EPA 608/Universal certification.
• Flexibility in work hours to cover all shifts.
• Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience using CMMS &or BMS.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, One Note, Outlook).

• Trade school education, union training, military service, or college education.
• Prior military background in Army Prime Power, Navy ET/Nuke, Air Force HVAC/Power Pro/Electrician, or related trade schooling.
