Purpose of Position

This position is charged with direct project management responsibilities for ensuring that Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) and Repair and Renovation (R&R) projects are completed on time and within established budgets while meeting all applicable building codes and university requirements with minimal disruption to ongoing university activities. The Capital Project Coordinator will manage multiple complex projects, valued up to $120M, ranging from new construction to extensive renovations, including infrastructure, safety systems, and information technology facilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of governing Building Codes, NCCU/UNC System Guidelines, North Carolina laws, and National Fire Protection Codes.

• Ability to review and evaluate contractual documentation and correspondence for completeness, compatibility, and compliance with engineering‑architectural standards.

• Proficiency in contract delivery methods such as Construction Management at Risk, Lump Sum, Design/Build, and private ventures.

• Ability to perform inspections/audits to ensure contract compliance and evaluate progress against milestones.

• Strong problem‑solving skills: resolving design errors, unforeseen conditions, and owner requests rapidly and independently.

• Excellent communication skills, capable of presenting complex information orally and in written form to diverse stakeholders.

• Proficiency in applying architectural and engineering principles to moderate‑complex projects, including design review, negotiation, and decision making.

Department Required Skills
  • Proficient knowledge of standard design and construction practices with both office and field experience.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient operation of personal computer and software for email, word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
  • Working knowledge of eVP and State Construction Office guidelines preferred.
Minimum Education / Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent combination of training and experience. Five to seven years of experience in architectural, engineering, or construction management is required. Licensure by the North Carolina Board of Architects or Engineers is preferred but not mandatory.

Licenses or Certification Required

The ability to obtain Registered Architect (RA) or Professional Engineer (PE) license from NC is preferred but not required.
