As the University Archives Intern for Student Engagement, you ll play an essential role in bringing student stories to life—capturing the energy, diversity, and creativity that define Duke s student experience. As part of the Rubenstein Library s University Archives (UA), you ll actively engage with student communities, strengthen Duke s historical record, and expand the voices represented in its archives. You ll work hands-on, build relationships, and contribute directly to making Duke s historical record more inclusive and representative of our diverse student body.
You ll Do
- Partner closely with the Assistant University Archivist to build authentic relationships with student groups across campus.
- Support workshops, social media content, blog posts, and exhibits that elevate the UA s student-collecting initiative.
- Respond to reference questions from students, faculty/staff, alumni, and external researchers about student groups, Greek life, athletics, and other student-driven activities.
- Assist with primary source instruction focused on Duke history.
- Provide occasional service in the Rubenstein Reading Room.
- Work occasional evenings, as needed.
- Routinely move library materials up to 40 pounds and work safely in environments where dust or mold exposure may occur.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

- Enrollment or recent completion of a master s program in archival studies, public history, or library/information science.
- Interest in institutional archives, outreach, and collaborative community work.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and time-management abilities.
- A commitment to exceptional service and fostering an inclusive environment.
- Preferred:
Experience with special collections or coursework in archival theory.
