Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The University College offers academic support services designed to transition first- and second-year students smoothly into university life. Through Academic Advising, Academic Success Coaching, Tutoring, Supplemental Learning, and other resources, we empower students to navigate their academic journeys and achieve timely graduation while fostering holistic development.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Senior Academic Advisor provides direct advisement to first-year students, sophomores, and transfer students via one‑on‑one meetings, workshops, and presentations. The role assesses individual situations, creates, implements, and monitors academic progression and retention plans, and collaborates with internal and external partners to meet student needs. In addition, the advisor leads initiatives such as new employee training, academic appeal reviews, committee representation, and mentorship of colleagues to foster a culture of excellence.

Excellent organizational and communication skills. Familiarity with and appreciation for NCCU’s mission, programs, and curricula.

Minimum Education /Experience

Minimum requirements:

Bachelor’s degree. Preferably a Master’s degree in education, counseling, or a related field. Three to five years of higher‑education advising experience, with a preference for excellent advising background.

Responsibilities And Duties
  • Conduct individual and small group advising sessions to discuss majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and course selection.
  • Provide personalized guidance and support, review progress, and propose schedule adjustments and recommendations.
  • Assist students in accessing tutoring, supplemental instruction, and academic success workshops.
  • Offer interventions for high‑risk students identified through early alert mechanisms, including early warning, mid‑term reporting, and semester‑final grade reviews.
  • Collaborate with the Academic Advising Coordinator and Associate Dean to coordinate initiatives, train new staff, review academic appeals, and enhance student engagement.
  • Share best practices, mentor colleagues, and maintain compliance with university policies.
  • Develop and implement retention strategies, monitor academic progression, and support holistic development.
  • Leverage advising technology tools to streamline processes, maintain records, and improve communication.
  • Represent University College on campus committees and partner with campus collaborators to enrich the student experience.
  • Attend departmental meetings and perform related duties as assigned.
