Primary Function of Organizational UnitThe University College offers a comprehensive array of academic support services geared towards facilitating the smooth transition of first‑ and second‑year students into the university environment. Through Academic Advising, Academic Success Coaching, Tutoring, Supplemental Learning, and a host of other resources, we aim to empower students to navigate their academic journey successfully. Our primary objective is to guide students toward timely graduation within four years while also nurturing their holistic development throughout their college experience.
PrimaryPurpose of Position
The Senior Academic Advisor provides academic advisement to NCCU’s University College constituents (first‑year students, sophomores, and transfer students) through one‑on‑one meetings, workshops, and presentations regarding majors, degree requirements, academic progress, and selection of courses for future semesters. This position assesses individual student situations and circumstances to create, implement and monitor students’ academic progression, retention, and holistic development with the support of internal/external organizations and resources that meet student needs.
In addition to providing direct support to students, the Senior Academic Advisor plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture of excellence within the advising unit. This leadership extends to coordinating advising initiatives, offering mentorship to colleagues, proactively identifying opportunities to bolster student retention rates, and representing University College on campus committees to advocate for its interests.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission and structure of NCCU programs and curricula.
- Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree in education, counseling, or a related field, plus 3–5 years of experience in higher education, with excellent advising preferred.

- Review student progression in coursework to ensure students advance adequately in their curriculum plan and make necessary schedule adjustments and recommendations.
- Assist students in accessing and utilizing support services, including tutoring, supplemental instruction, and academic success workshops.
