About The School Nurse Position

The School Nurse reports to the KIPP School Operations Leader with support from the Principals and Regional Operations Team. The nurse collaborates with school staff to maintain a safe and healthy environment for KIPP North Carolina students, works with staff and families to provide high-quality service to all students, and is a member of the school operations team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervising a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) to support the medical needs on the Gaston campus.
  • Remove, modify, or reduce health-related barriers to learning.
  • Provide well-student care, health care, first aid, immunizations, and assistance to students; create a comforting and nurturing environment for ill students.
  • Provide daily, individual care to students, including managing daily medications, administering doctor-prescribed medications, and assisting students with physical disabilities.
  • Advise the Director of Operations and other staff on health initiatives, processes, and systems to ensure a healthy school community.
  • Build emergency preparedness plans and train staff to ensure readiness for health emergencies.
  • Communicate daily with families about student wellness and health concerns.
  • Participate in health events that may occur on non-school days (e.g., New Student Registration).
  • Perform screenings (scoliosis, vision, hearing, height, weight) and make referrals and follow-up as needed.
  • Maintain student records (accident reports, health records), update and submit reports, and manage health paperwork systems.
  • Ensure 100% collection of student health documentation for incoming new students.
  • Maintain, organize, and audit physical student health files; transfer health materials and information for student transfers between campuses.
  • Maintain confidentiality of health information.
  • Collect and maintain student incident forms with documented details for all applicable parties.
  • Collaborate with staff to create and maintain wellness programming for students.
  • Maintain all mandated COVID protocols and hold staff and students accountable to those health protocols.

Requirements

Required Qualifications
  • A deep commitment to the mission of KIPP NC and belief in the potential of all students.
  • Strong commitment to racial equity and improving the lives of kids from low-income communities; experience working in predominantly Black, Brown, and/or low-income communities.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in North Carolina.
  • Willingness to become School Nurse certified in North Carolina within 3 years of hire.
  • CPR Certification.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage ambiguity and multiple priorities in an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Proactive problem-solver who demonstrates initiative.
  • Ability to work well with others and build cross-team relationships.
  • Strong work ethic with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in nursing and/or School Nurse Practitioner certification.
  • Previous school nursing experience.
  • National School Nurse Certification.
  • Experience in a charter or independent school environment preferred.
  • Spanish language proficiency.
Total Rewards

Salary for this role is commensurate with experience and education and ranges from $55,000 - $65,000.
