Overview

North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is seeking a Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. The Division of Academic Affairs, through the Office of the Provost, supports the academic enterprise including strategic planning, program development, instruction quality, research initiatives, enrollment management, and faculty/staff professional development. The Office of Faculty Affairs supports postdoctoral researchers integral to NCCU’s teaching, research, and learning activities.

Primary Function and Responsibilities

The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs manages and supports faculty-related academic processes. Responsibilities include interpreting university policies related to faculty, overseeing faculty recruitment, appointments, promotions, tenure, professorships, awards, academic leadership development, and reporting. The Vice Provost will build relationships across academic units to foster collaboration and will manage life-cycle processes for tenure, recruitment, and retention of highly qualified faculty.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Faculty Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure: manage post-tenure review; guide faculty through reappointment, promotion, and tenure; oversee workflows and timelines; manage the digital platform Faculty Success (Digital Measures) for reviews.
  • Faculty Recruitment, Recognition and Retention: identify and coordinate recognition awards, scholarships, fellowships, teaching enhancements, leadership and professional development opportunities; oversee appointments like professor emeritus and endowed chairs to ensure policy compliance.
  • Faculty Development: lead the Office for Faculty Professional Development; develop orientation and robust development programs for faculty, chairs, and deans; collaborate with HR and Academic Resources Management; align with NCCU Faculty Senate; direct the Phased Retirement Program and coordinate with HR benefits; partner on COACHE survey and related initiatives; coordinate with General Counsel on grievances and disciplinary processes.
  • Leadership Development for Academic Leaders: establish leadership development for department chairs and program directors; conduct orientation and development sessions; advise on policies for evaluating academic leadership; collaborate with deans and department heads on retention and policy matters.
  • Faculty Policy Development and Governance: draft and maintain institutional faculty policies; serve as liaison to Faculty Senate committees; collaborate with GC, HR, Compliance, and other offices to ensure policy compliance and needs of faculty and units.
  • Postdoctoral Affairs: manage programs/services to promote postdoctoral career development; liaison between postdocs, faculty, and administration; monitor policies related to postdoctoral appointments; prepare related policies and procedures; coordinate reporting of postdoctoral statistics.
Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in a relevant field qualifying for tenure at the Associate/Professor rank.
  • At least 7–10 years of progressive leadership experience in higher education at the department chair level or higher.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead institutional change and improve faculty excellence and student success.
  • Proven track record in academic and faculty affairs; strong skills in faculty development, team leadership, data analysis, and cross-campus collaboration.

  • Leadership of change, collaboration across units, and effective communication with diverse stakeholders.
