This is a shared, part-time, temporary position (10% FTE) and will not exceed 11 months.

GENERAL DESCRIPTIONProvides coverage for the North Carolina Collection (NCC), the special collections department of Durham County Library. Work is performed independently under the supervision of the North Carolina Collection Manager. Provide relief and emergency coverage at all Durham County Library locations. Must be available for weekend rotations (Saturdays and Sundays) and for holiday coverage. This position is expected to work at least 20 hours per week.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and weekends and have reliable transportation.
- Holds shifts at the NCC Information Desk and provides research assistance to customers both in-person and remotely through email, phone, and chat.
- Work on collection-based projects. This can include archival processing of manuscript collections, cataloging work with the bibliographic collection, management of digital collections, and digitization of materials.
- Participate in promotional activities for the collection including creating digital and physical exhibits, holding instructional sessions with a wide variety of customers, and hosting library programs.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- General knowledge of professional library and archival principles, procedures, materials and practices.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and library patrons.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand and interpret library rules, policies, and procedures.
- Strong computer skills in a variety of tools, software, and platforms.
- Commitment to excellence in customer service.
Requires a master's degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSNorth Carolina local history knowledge preferred as well as experience in archives or special collections.
