As part of the Land Grant University, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University is composed of over 40 faculty that direct a varied portfolio of programs in teaching, research, and extension. Our education and research programs provide graduate and undergraduate students with unique hands-on learning opportunities using the latest technologies.
The department houses the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, the Larry Grand Mycological Herbarium, Micropropagation and Repository Unit, Structural Pest Management Training Facility, an Insect Museum with 1.9 million vouchered insects, and the Center for Integrated Fungal Research.
Job Duties
This faculty position will develop an extension, research and teaching program addressing the biology, ecology and management of arthropod pests in and around structures in urban and rural settings. Main responsibilities include:
- Extension (60%):
Provide statewide leadership and support for Extension programming on structural, urban, and household pest management in residential, commercial, and institutional settings; develop and deliver practical, research-based outreach through workshops, seminars, webinars, and online platforms; oversee operations and programming at the Structural Pest Management Training and Research Facility; build partnerships with industry stakeholders and regulatory bodies; represent NC State at meetings to promote initiatives. - Research (25%):
Develop a nationally recognized applied research program on peridomestic, structural, and household pests; conduct field and laboratory trials to assess pest management strategies; secure extramural funding; publish findings and collaborate across disciplines. - Teaching (15%):
Teach and contribute to undergraduate or Agricultural Institute courses related to urban entomology, structural pest management, or IPM; mentor graduate students and support student learning through experiential instruction.
There are opportunities to collaborate with NC Agromedicine Institute, the Center for Human Health and the Environment, the College of Natural Resources, and other partners. The incumbent is expected to mentor graduate students for master’s and doctoral degrees.
QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience
PhD in Entomology or related field

A demonstrated record of collaborative research and scholarship, stakeholder engagement, and innovative approaches to pest management; commitment to working with Urban Entomology stakeholders; demonstrated expertise in a relevant field; dedication to collaborative research and engagement.
