Registered Respiratory Therapist- Per Diem Nights

Overview

Performs all aspects and modalities of Respiratory Care to Health System patients per department guidelines. Responds to resuscitation situations and other respiratory emergencies when needed. Maintains and completes appropriate documentation in patients’ charts and departmental records. Performs as charge therapist when necessary.

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:

• Administer continuous oxygen and continuous bland aerosol therapy per department guidelines
• Perform intermittent therapy and diagnostic procedures per department guidelines
• Access patient medication from the Medication Security Area to implement Respiratory Care per hospital and departmental policies and procedures
• Initiate and maintain mechanical ventilation and complete appropriate documentation
• Provide airway management, ventilation, and closed chest compression as necessary during emergency resuscitation
• Perform intubations after receiving approval
• Assess patient condition and respond to respiratory care needs, make recommendations when necessary, and ensure protocols are followed
• Initiate and maintain monitoring equipment under the responsibility of the Respiratory Care Department
• Perform as charge therapist in the absence of a supervisor
• Charge for all services provided, including use of BCX system
• Other duties as assigned

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

• Graduate of a COARC approved Respiratory Care Program required
• Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT) required
• Licensed by the NCRCB required
• BCLS certified by the American Heart Association required

• Clinical experience preferred

• Understanding of medical terminology and current respiratory care modalities
• Ability to react calmly and maintain composure in stressful situations and when dealing with co-workers, patients, and hospital guests
• Knowledge of the psychosocial and physiological development and spiritual needs of infants, children, adolescents, and all adult age groups to provide appropriate care and intervention

• Ability to communicate orally
• Manual dexterity to operate and assemble equipment
• Visual acuity
• Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time
• Ability to position and move patients
• Ability to push heavy equipment to patients’ bedsides
• May involve skin, eye, and mucous membranes with blood or other potentially infectious materials
