Position ObjectiveTo transport students to and from a variety of school sites and to assure their safety as passengers in the school bus, as well as to ensure that the assigned bus is in a safe operating condition at all times. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Drivers may be assigned to drive wheelchair or ambulatory buses.
EssentialFunctions
- Drive a school bus safely and in accordance with time schedules; transport students to and from their homes, a variety of school sites and on field trips as assigned.
- Operate a two‑way radio.
- Oversee the loading and unloading of students, releasing students to authorized individuals; assure that safety belts are fastened, if necessary.
- May operate a special ramp bus; load and unload students in wheelchairs on and off bus; inspect wheelchairs for operational safety and permit only properly functioning wheelchairs to load; operate ramp, assuring seatbelts are fastened; position and secure the wheelchairs in bus.
- Maintain order and proper discipline of passengers; resolve disputes; document and report severe disciplinary cases.
- Conduct established safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily.
- Assure maintenance of bus in safe and clean operating condition; report needed mechanical repairs; sweep interior of the bus and wash windows as needed; follow established security procedures.
- Assist in the establishment of drop‑off and pickup order of assigned students; confer with parents, supervisors, schedulers, and other staff regarding transportation needs; plot route on map, document route, and adjust route as necessary for new and/or dropped students.
- Monitor students with special health problems while in bus according to written or oral instructions, being aware and alert to any signs of difficulty following prescribed instructions and procedures; administer first aid, and call for emergency assistance if needed.
- Maintain a variety of records and reports including, but not limited to, mileage, routing, maintenance, and time schedules.
- Attend meetings, programs, and in‑service training as assigned.
- Maintain current required licenses and certificates.
- Notify appropriate individuals of any delays in scheduled route.
- Follow district policy on accident procedures.
- Have knowledge of bus evacuation procedures.
- Comply with district handbook.
- Maintain compliance with CDL regulations.
- Assist with other routes when breakdown or other unusual circumstances occur as assigned.
- Maintain a neat personal appearance and a pleasant demeanor with students, staff and parents.
- Display professional behavior and language at all times.
- Additional duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license for three consecutive years.
- Must have a valid and appropriate CDL Driver License with passenger endorsement.
- Must have a valid Illinois State School Bus Permit.
- Must have a safe driving record which meets the Dunlap Community District #323 standards (no more than 1 moving violation within a 36‑month period).
- Ability to read and interpret a map.
- Ability to establish and maintain proper conduct and safety of passengers on school bus.
- Ability to accept/relate to students with a variety of exceptional needs.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and extreme caution while operating a school bus.
- Ability to remain calm in an emergency situation.
- Ability to read and write in English at a level sufficient to successfully perform required duties.
- Ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner.
- Ability to recognize mechanical safety hazards in bus.
- Ability to learn to operate a two‑way radio using required codes.
- Must meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the required duties.
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures.
