Position: Specialist Clinical Pharmacist, CMHT and Mental Health (LW)

Overview

NHS Fife Pharmacy and Medicines Directorate has an opportunity for a Specialist Clinical Pharmacist in Community Mental Health teams (CMHT) and Mental Health services.

This role provides a unique opportunity to manage a caseload of patients within inpatient and outpatient mental health settings, and with a variety of mental health conditions, ideally working as an independent prescriber, to provide support and advice to patients, carers /families and multidisciplinary teams. You will showcase your pharmacy expertise in safety of prescribing, administration and governance of medicines, and will be accountable to the senior Mental health and CMHT pharmacist in developing the medication governance, safety delivery in CMHT and inpatient mental health services in Fife.

In shaping the development of pharmaceutical care for patients on CMHT caseloads, you will also work closely with the multidisciplinary team and provide specialist pharmacy advice to ensure safe, appropriate and clinically effective use of medicines in line with national guidance. You will also work across a range of specialist mental health teams, and cross-sector colleagues: including primary care and community pharmacies, in providing patient-centred and seamless care.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a caseload of patients within inpatient and outpatient mental health settings, providing specialist pharmacy advice to ensure safe, appropriate and clinically effective use of medicines.
  • Work as an independent prescriber (if qualified) or contribute to prescribing safety, governance, and delivery of medication safety in CMHT and inpatient services.
  • Be accountable to the senior Mental Health and CMHT pharmacist in developing medication governance and safety delivery.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to shape pharmaceutical care for CMHT caseloads and to support patient-centred, seamless care across primary care and community pharmacies.
  • Supervise Foundation pharmacists and participate in peer-support networks for independent prescribers and specialist-interest pharmacists.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Independent prescribing qualification (or working towards it) is essential.
  • Completion of the Pharmacy Foundation Programme is desirable.
  • Based at Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline, with willingness to travel across West Fife to cover CMHT and Mental Health services.
  • Ability to provide supervision to Foundation pharmacists.
  • Be prepared to work with cross-sector colleagues across primary care and community pharmacies.
About the Department and Team

The NHS Fife Pharmacy and Medicines Service provides an ambitious programme of integrated care to the people of Fife. It serves a population of approximately 380,000 people and is staffed by around 300 Pharmacy staff, including Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Support Workers, Nurses and Administrators. The team operates across Acute and Community hospital sites, General Practices, Mental Health services, and a range of specialist teams.

Location & Travel

Fife has good transport links and is within easy reach of major cities. You will be based at Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline, but must be flexible and willing to travel across West Fife as required.

Existing permanent employees must first discuss this opportunity with their substantive line manager. The secondment policy can be found here.
