About the Post

Location:

Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford.

We invite applications for a post‑doctoral qualitative researcher to work with Dr Claire Friedemann Smith on three projects aimed at improving primary care cancer detection:

  • Pros Detect II: patient perspectives on the harms and benefits of prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing.
  • INFONET: cancer safety‑netting – exploring how text messages can engage patients who might need help with ongoing symptoms.
  • QUEST: systems analysis – examining how the organisation of cancer testing creates or increases inequalities in test access.

The successful applicant will work alongside experienced clinical and mixed‑methods researchers and implementation scientists using qualitative methods to develop interview schedules, collect and analyse data, and contribute to paper writing. It offers a stimulating environment, high‑profile projects with direct impact on policy and practice, and a dynamic, diverse team in a supportive and inclusive working environment. The post‑holder will also have the opportunity to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and contribute to department teaching if desired.

Responsibilities
  • Develop interview schedules and qualitative data collection tools.
  • Collect and analyse qualitative data using appropriate methods.
  • Contribute to writing and manuscript preparation.
  • Engage with and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Collaborate with clinical, mixed‑methods, and implementation scientists.
Qualifications
  • Possession of a DPhil or PhD (or near completion) in a relevant area.
  • Experience in cancer research and obtaining ethical approval for research.
  • Proven experience conducting qualitative research.
  • Ability to manage own research activities independently.
