Senior Engineer - Structures
Permanent | Full-Time | 36 Hours per Week
An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced Chartered Structural Engineer to take a leading role within a well-established highways and infrastructure engineering function. This position is ideal for someone with a strong background in bridge engineering, structural asset management, and maintenance design, who is looking to step into a senior role with real responsibility for technical delivery, team leadership, and programme oversight.
The RoleAs Senior Engineer (Structures), you will oversee the day‑to‑day management of a diverse portfolio of highway structures, including bridges and related assets. Working closely with senior management, you will lead the development, assessment, and delivery of structural improvement and maintenance schemes.
Key Responsibilities- Leading the design and delivery of new structural works and upgrade projects
- Managing general and principal inspection programmes for bridges and structures
- Developing maintenance solutions and long‑term asset strategies
- Overseeing structural surveys, contract documentation, and works supervision
- Managing structural asset databases and ensuring accurate reporting
- Supporting procurement and contract management, including claims and variations
- Providing technical leadership on abnormal load routing and structural safety
- Ensuring compliance with health & safety legislation and CDM regulations
- Mentoring and supporting engineers within the structures team
- Contributing to budgets, programme planning, and service performance targets
To succeed in this role, you will bring strong technical expertise combined with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy engineering environment.
Essential Requirements- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) with the Engineering Council
- Significant experience in bridges and highway structures
- Strong project and programme management capability
- Knowledge of contract administration and delivery frameworks
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- A proactive approach to risk management and structural safety
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent)
- Experience leading or supervising a technical team
- Familiarity with AutoCAD or structural/highway asset software
- IOSH Managing Safely (or similar qualification)
