Summer Coordinator – Cowichan Community Centre
The Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) is now accepting applications for the Summer Coordinator at the Cowichan Community Centre for summer 2026 in the South Cowichan Recreation Division. This is a great opportunity for those seeking experience in the recreation and childcare field.
Working under the supervision of the Recreation Programmer II, the Summer Coordinator coordinates and supports summer programming at the recreation centre and off‑site venues for children and youth ages 4‑18. The program includes an educational component to daily activities and promotes active, healthy lifestyles.
Responsibilities• Coordinate and support daily programming and special events.
• Supervise and support subordinate staff.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, managers, the public, and the children and youth.
• Communicate effectively in writing and verbally with co‑workers, parents, and supervisors.
• Work independently and as part of a team.
Qualifications- Preferred candidates are enrolled in post‑secondary education in a related field.
- Basic First Aid with CPR C certificate and a valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence are required.
- A valid Class 4 BC driver’s licence, Lifeguarding certification, and waterfront certification are assets.
- Experience developing, promoting, and leading recreation programs, and supervising children and youth ages 4‑12 is required.
- Knowledge of summer camp programming is required; knowledge of public relations in a small community is an asset.
- Enthusiastic, energetic, and enjoys working with children and youth.
- Effective organisation and coordinating skills; ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, managers and the public.
- Effectively supervise and support staff.
- Maintain a professional, respectful and fun relationship with children and youth while maintaining authority.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing when communicating with co‑workers, children, parents, and supervisors including listening and giving direction.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Preference will be given to candidates aged 15‑30 years as per the Canada Summer Jobs Program via Service Canada, but candidates outside this range will be considered.
This position is available for 12 weeks, commencing 15 June 2026 and continuing until 4 September 2026, subject to enrolment and funding. Hours are 35 hours per week, Monday‑Friday. A unionised position (CUPE Local 358) and compensation at $31.58 per hour ($27.58 + 6% pay in lieu of benefits + 6% pay in lieu of vacation + 2.5% pay in lieu of statutory holidays).
Opportunities to retain casual employment thereafter may be available.
