Position: Lecturer in Natural Hazards (R&T)

Based at the University of Glasgow’s Dumfries Campus, the School of Social & Environmental Sustainability is seeking to recruit a Lecturer in Natural Hazards to further enhance research and teaching across a developing portfolio of Environmental Science & Sustainability undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The successful candidate will be part of a collegiate and committed team of environmental science & sustainability colleagues working across a number of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

With a specific interest in Natural Hazards, their characterisation, and the risks they pose to society and ecosystems, our ambitious and inspiring new colleague will play a key role in the development and delivery of courses across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The ideal candidate will also have a broad knowledge across the environmental sciences and work in an interdisciplinary team. Successful applicants will also contribute to the School’s successes in securing ambitious research projects.

In addition to a comprehensive understanding of Natural Hazards, the ideal candidate will be confident in leading/teaching groups in the field and laboratory and collaborate with external agencies. Skills in GIS applications would be particularly welcomed.

It is expected that applicants should be willing to teach across the University’s campuses, potentially in China on our joint programmes with leading Chinese universities, and more generally overseas if and when required.

The postholder will deliver exciting and engaging learning and teaching activities, undertake research of international excellence and contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the discipline, and contribute to administration and service activities in line with the School/College’s strategic objectives.

Job Purpose

To deliver exciting and engaging learning and teaching activities, undertake research of international excellence and contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the discipline, and contribute to administration and service activities in line with the School/College’s strategic objectives. For appointment at Grade 8, a substantial contribution will include leading high quality research activities and delivering, organising and reviewing key areas of teaching and learning within the School.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses within the subject area in accordance with the subject’s priorities including accepting responsibilities as course co‑ordinator for one or more courses. This could include teaching internationally.
  • Contribute to the on‑going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research‑led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.
  • Participate fully in examination and other assessment processes, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and to provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
  • Develop and progress individual/joint research projects of international standard in the subject area with the support of a mentor, as required.
  • Write up research findings/outcomes for publication in leading journals for dissemination as appropriate, identifying potential sources and contributing to funding applications as an individual or team member.
  • Contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College, including establishing a track record of high‑quality publications.
  • Contribute to the development of theory and practice in the subject area.
  • Supervise individual student projects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, and to contribute to the supervision and training of postgraduate research students, as appropriate, to ensure their effective development.
