Program OverviewAfter completing two years as an Apprentice Paraprofessional, participants may be eligible to seek an Apprentice Teacher position. Exception: individuals with an Associates Degree may seek an Apprentice Teacher position. Approval for pursuing this type of position is granted on an individual basis by the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and is determined based on the individual’s experience and job performance.
An individual course plan is created to help each participant complete the necessary coursework for graduation. Dumas ISD will reimburse tuition costs up to $6,000 annually. Participants will furnish a current transcript indicating course completion at the end of the fall, spring, and summer semesters.
Support is provided at all stages in the program. A program advisor serves as a liaison between all stakeholders, and an instructional coach is assigned to each participant to provide job-embedded professional development and support.
Application ProcessThe application window opens in the spring of each year. A notification of acceptance is provided before the conclusion of the school year. Individuals must have worked with DISD for at least two years to be eligible to apply. Informational sessions are hosted before the opening of the application window. Details for applying to the program are provided at the informational sessions.
The application will be submitted electronically and is comprised of the following components:
- Resume
- Written Essay
- Recommendations (2 from DISD employees, one from a community member)
An application committee will review application components, and acceptance will be based on the committee’s determination. All application components will be considered when making acceptance determinations. If accepted, the applicant may apply for approved open positions.
Apprentice Teacher Status- An Apprentice Teacher will be hired under a District of Innovation contract. Continued employment in the role is contingent upon satisfactory performance. To evaluate Apprentice Teachers, campus principals will utilize the T‑TESS rubric, calendar, and processes.
- Academic Probation:
Failure to maintain semester course completion schedules for one semester will place the individual on academic probation. Failure to maintain semester course completion a 2nd time will require removal from the Apprentice Teacher position. - Eligibility:
Approved by the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel to be employed as an Apprentice Teacher through a District of Innovation contract. Have been selected by the building principal to teach a designated grade or subject. - Salary:
Paid at the Texas State Base Teacher Salary (Subject to TEA updates).
