Overview

A Heavy Equipment Mechanic will perform journeyman mechanic work diagnosing and repairing trucks and heavy equipment. The location of this Heavy Equipment Mechanic position is the David M. Skelton Transportation Building in Cook, MN.

The salary range reflected above is the normal hiring range for 2025. The full salary range, including longevity pay, is $26.90 - $37.91. 2026 rates are currently pending.

An employee in this class performs difficult and skilled mechanical work. Duties include diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing light, medium and heavy equipment in the field or shop. The work is performed under the direction of assigned supervisory staff.

Environment factors are general in nature and may vary depending on the specific position being filled.

  • CONSTANT: Lift and carry up to 30 pounds; push/pull up to 25 pounds; grip strength up to 30 pounds; balance; hand/finger coordination; reaching forward; stand; walk; vision (near, far, field of vision & color); hearing (close and distant).
  • FREQUENT: Lift and carry up to 40 pounds; push/pull up to 40 pounds; grip strength up to 40 pounds; bend & reach; squat.
  • OCCASIONAL: Lift and carry up to 70 pounds; push/pull up to 55 pounds; grip strength up to 185 pounds; climb ladders/stairs; crawl; kneel; reaching overhead; sit (with positional changes); smell; driving.
  • RARE: Push/pull over 160 pounds; grip strength up to 200 pounds (both hands).

Note:

At times, use of awkward body mechanics may be required based on limited space and repair work that needs to be completed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Pass/Fail)
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Graduation from a vocational training program in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment mechanics or equivalent program; OR three (3) years of full-time paid verifiable experience as a heavy equipment mechanic; OR equivalent training and experience as determined by the director of human resources.
  • Possession of a valid Class ‘D’ license with the ability to obtain a Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a tank vehicle endorsement and without any of the following restrictions within twelve (12) months of employment: air brake, full air brake, manual transmission, or tractor trailer. Failure to obtain the appropriate Class ‘A’ license within twelve (12) months will result in termination from the position.
  • Possession of MN DOT Commercial Vehicle Inspector certification within twelve (12) months of employment. Failure to obtain the MN DOT Commercial Vehicle Inspector certification within twelve (12) months will result in termination from the position.
RATING SYSTEM
