Overview

Schedule - Shift - Hours Part-time - D/E - 8 hours

Under direct supervision of a registered nurse, the Patient Safety Companion (PSC) is responsible for providing in-person and alert observation and monitoring of patients demonstrating behaviors that pose a threat to self or others. In collaboration with the patient care team, the PSC ensures the patient environment is free of obstacles, hazards, contraband and minimizes the risk of falls and accidental or intentional self-harm.

The PSC may also assist with basic activities of daily living.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Less than high school

Experience: N/A

Licensure/Certification/Registration: Upon hire, BLS Certification with a designation of either BLS Provider or Healthcare Provider from either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross or Military Training Network. Certification in MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) training within six (6) months of hire into position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school graduate or G.E.D. with general knowledge of the hospital setting.

KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of basic mathematical computation; legible printing and/or handwriting. Ability to assemble and disassemble equipment and instrumentation; to comprehend and follow complex verbal and written instructions; to observe and report anything that varies from normal and expected; to contribute to new staff orientation and to students learning by serving as a resource person, building self-confidence in others by teaching and offering positive reinforcement;

to maintain confidentiality.

Capable of monitoring a patient while remaining alert at all times while on duty

Ability to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient behavioral changes

Ability to use discretion and courtesy when working with patients, visitors, and staff

Basic computer operation skills

Basic Microsoft Windows experience

READING - Intermediate:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

WRITING - Basic:
Ability to write simple correspondence.

SPEAKING - Basic:
Ability to speak simple sentences.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
- Basic Skills:

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY - Intermediate

Skills:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES - Skilled at assessment and knowledgeable of growth and development. Provides appropriate care respective to the ages of the patients served per clinical environment.
