Job Summary
The Prototype Fabrication Specialist is an integral member of the Advanced Design & Development (AD&D) team. AD&D is a small group within Cirrus Aircraft Product Development whose charter is the development of new capabilities and technologies intended for our current and next generation aircraft. Prototype Fabrication Specialists will conceive and develop a wide range of prototype components. The scope may range from individual parts and systems to creating full scale highly detailed mockups.
Problem‑solving and communication skills are highly valued as the role is a crucial part of new product development. Specialists also need to work effectively in groups and with other departments across the organization. A thorough knowledge of materials, including foam, composites, wood, textiles and metal, along with fabrication techniques is required. Strong attention to detail and quality are required. A drive for constant improvement and an inquisitive nature are essential to this role.
The ideal candidate is comfortable with driving results even during the vague early stages of development.
Monday–Thursday, 6:00 AM–4:30 PM or Tuesday–Friday, 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Duties and Responsibilities- Design, develop and execute your own design and designs from others
- Execute composite layups with precision across various techniques and materials
- Operate CNC mills, lathes, and manual tools to create prototypes, molds, and fixtures
- Install and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical assemblies
- Collaborate with engineers and designers to bring early‑stage concepts to life
- Provide feedback on manufacturability, design feasibility, and process improvements
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safety‑conscious workspace
- Regular, reliable, and predictable attendance
- Travel requirements estimated at 10%, including the possibility to travel internationally
- Company vehicle driving requirements estimated at 10%; must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
- 5 years of combined education & experience in fabrication, homebuilding aircraft, model making, manufacturing, product design and development, or equivalent life experience
- Associates or Bachelor’s degree in a related field or military experience is preferred
- Familiarity with 3D printing, 3D scanning, and basic CAD/CAM tools
- Experience with metal fabrication and welding is a plus
- Hands‑on experience with composite fabrication (e.g., wet layup, prepreg, vacuum bagging, infusion, etc.)
- Ability to communicate clearly and contribute to iterative design processes
- Passion for innovation and experimental design
- Comfortable working in ambiguous, prototype‑heavy environments
- Eager to learn and push the boundaries of traditional manufacturing
- Aviation Industry experience or A&P license are a plus
- Competency with MS Office, Mastercam, Fusion
360, PTC Creo/Windchill, Bambu Studio/Orca Slicer - Ability to demonstrate sound judgement and effective communication skills (written and verbal)
