Join Resource Renew as a Full-Time Environmental Technician and immerse yourself in a dynamic role that champions sustainability and environmental stewardship. The Environmental Technician is responsible for the operation of the District's Household Hazardous Waste facility, supporting the Regional Hazardous Waste Program and facilitating mobile collection events. This position provides technical leadership in the proper collection, transportation and management of hazardous waste, and serves and supports the public, local businesses, regional programs and the District.

Saturdays required on a rotational basis.

Resource Renew, the brand of Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD), is committed to preventing pollution and protecting the environment, including the region's most precious resource - Lake Superior. Founded as a special purpose unit of government created by the Minnesota Legislature in 1971 to address serious environmental pollution problems in the lower St. Louis River Basin, Resource Renew provides wastewater and solid waste services and oversight for a 530 square mile region around Duluth, Minnesota.

Our facilities include a main wastewater treatment plant, multiple pump stations, and solid waste collection sites of varied types.

AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICAN, YOU WILL:
  • Carry out daily operational responsibilities of the Regional Household Hazardous Waste Program while adhering to all standard operating procedures
  • Engage with internal and external customers to ensure hazardous waste is managed correctly and safely
  • Identify, segregate, and prepare hazardous waste for transportation and disposal following all applicable federal, state, and local regulations
  • Ensure accuracy of invoices, manifests, and shipping documents
  • Coordinate and facilitate hazardous waste mobile collection events
  • Maintain awareness of chemical hazards, safe work practices, and respond to emergency situations involving hazardous waste
  • Provide professional assistance while carrying out the duties of the District's Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG) program
  • Support the District's Hazardous Waste Generator license by completing annual reports and renewal applications
  • Complete facility inspections and submit maintenance requests
  • Respond to emergency conditions and develop an appropriate course of action
  • Assist in developing and reviewing standard operating procedures
  • Provide support and staffing services to county programs and facilities within the Regional program
  • Operate forklifts, trucks, off‑road equipment, and over‑the‑road commercial vehicles as needed
  • Accurately operate a cash register and charge account system
  • Maintain all required licenses and certifications and attend additional training as necessary
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in environmental science, biology, geology, chemistry, or a closely related field
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Experience managing hazardous waste preferred
  • Possess a Class "B" driver's license with a hazardous materials endorsement or must obtain one within nine months of hire
