Position: Teaching Assistant Professor or an Instructor with an Emphasis in Public Law

About the Job

The Department of Political Science at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) seeks a full‑time, non‑tenure‑track teaching assistant professor or an instructor with an emphasis in Public Law for a one‑year position. The appointment is primarily in‑person with a possibility of renewal if instructional need persists. The successful candidate will have a 4-3 course load: two courses in Constitutional Law, one introductory research methods course for undergraduates, and additional introductory courses in Political Theory and/or American Government.

An asynchronous online section of American Government may also be offered. Other upper‑level courses may be in public law or in a subfield of the candidate’s preference. Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in political science or a related field. The appointment begins on August 18, 2026, and applications are accepted starting March 30, 2026.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • MA or MS in Political Science or related field

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or J.D. in Political Science or related field
  • Two years of teaching at the collegiate level
  • Evidence of strong written communication skills and the ability to work with diverse groups

The Department of Political Science is part of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) and offers majors and minors in political science and international studies, as well as a minor in social analytics.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range:

  • Instructor: $44,156–$49,856 per year (depending on education/qualifications/experience)
  • Teaching Assistant Professor: $49,892.25–$66,523 per year (depending on education/qualifications/experience)

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment

Position Type: Faculty and P&A Staff
