Internship Overview
The Internship program provides an opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain hands‑on professional experience while supporting the work of The Salvation Army. This internship is designed to offer meaningful exposure to nonprofit operations, project‑based work, and professional development in a mission‑driven organization.
The intern will work closely with staff members and may contribute to research, analysis, administrative support, program development, and special projects, depending on departmental needs and the intern’s interests.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide assistance in the coordination and deliverance of disaster services to individuals and communities. Provide assistance in all areas of the disaster services department including but not limited to: planning and working with government or non-government agency partners to coordinate services.
- Works with National Emergency Disaster Services Director, Program Specialist, NCRD staff, and Salvation Army officers and staff. Assumes other duties as assigned by the Emergency Disaster Services Program Specialist. Demonstrates dependability through attendance and punctuality.
- Provide basic information and answer questions regarding Disaster Services.
- Participate in office and department meetings, other meetings as appropriate; participate in community/partner meetings and networking.
- Assist with National Emergency Disaster Services newsletters.
- Assist with compiling statistics and stories/new articles for reports.
- Attend and complete educational opportunities when appropriate.
- Work on personal, office, and department goals.
This internship is intended to be a learning experience. The intern will:
- Gain exposure to nonprofit and/or faith‑based organizational operations
- Develop professional skills such as communication, research, time management, and collaboration
- Work under the guidance of experienced professionals
- Establish learning goals at the start of the internship and receive feedback throughout the summer
Qualifications
- Must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in public safety, emergency management, or related field.
- Experience working in public safety or emergency management is preferred.
- Understanding of the delivery of disaster services preferred.
- Excellent communication skills; including organizational, proofreading, editing, and problem-solving skills.
- Must complete the following: “Introduction to The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster” course within 15 days of the date of appointment.
- Undergraduate student pursuing a degree in the areas of public safety, emergency management, or related field.
- Previous experience working in a professional office setting preferred.
- Proficiency with Office 365 suite and other remote collaboration tools.
- Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written.
