The Office for Refugees and Immigrants (ORI) is seeking a Communications Intern from May 2026 to December 2026. This unpaid internship is available to enrolled undergraduate or graduate students seeking academic credit. The intern will assist the Communications Manager in designing and implementing strategies to promote ORI’s programs and activities. Under the Manager’s supervision, the intern is expected to work a minimum of 15 hours per week in a role that offers hybrid work options.

We seek a customer-focused Communications Intern committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and public service, with an interest in refugee and immigrant communities. The ideal candidate has strong interpersonal, verbal, written, presentation, and analytical skills, and is proactive. Experience with Canva, social media, and digital accessibility or website management is a plus. Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite is required.

Learning Opportunities (these items are a general summary and not all-inclusive):
  • Gain insight into organizational communication by attending internal meetings with ORI’s Communications Manager and other units.
  • Develop information management skills by creating and updating provider and partner directories.
  • Develop writing and communication skills through emails, newsletters, reports, and social media content for diverse audiences.
  • Enhance creativity and technical skills by contributing to graphics, presentations, and marketing materials.
  • Gain experience in digital communication by helping develop social media posts for ORI’s Facebook, Instagram, X, and Threads feeds.
  • Support website management by updating ORI’s webpage to keep information current and accurate.
  • Explore digital accessibility best practices by assisting with the application of accessibility requirements to public-facing content.
  • Gain an understanding of performance measurement by supporting the update of Communication KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).
  • Experience a variety of additional learning opportunities through other tasks assigned by ORI’s Communications Manager.

About the Office for Refugees and Immigrants (ORI):

In 1985, the Massachusetts Office of Refugee Resettlement was designated by the MA Executive Order to be responsible for refugee affairs in the state. In 1992, the state legislature established the Office for Refugees and Immigrants (ORI). The ORI Executive Director is the State Refugee Coordinator per the Refugee Act 1980 and state law.

The Office administers programs that provide direct services to clients through a network of resettlement agencies, faith-based organizations, and ethnic community-based organizations, serving the culturally and linguistically diverse needs of newcomer populations.

ORI’s mission is to promote the full participation of refugees and immigrants as self-sufficient individuals and families in Massachusetts’s economic, social, and civic life.
