Boys & Girls Club of the Smoky Mountains

The Social and Emotional Wellness Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the overall well‑being of Club members and their families at the Boys & Girls Club of the Smoky Mountains. This field placement offers an opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in youth development, mental health, social work, family engagement, and resource coordination.

Must be a social work student or related field (psychology, counseling, etc) at the Bachelor’s or Master’s Level currently enrolled in an accredited university or college.

The internship is a 12‑week program for the Summer 2026 semester from May 22nd (a required training day) to August 7th. The internship is 18 hours per week with main programming occurring between 10 AM to 2 PM. We have 5 Club sites that are open between 7 AM to 6 PM Monday to Friday during the summer. Interns will work with the DSEW to determine a schedule that works the best for the intern that includes at least three days to distribute the 18 hours per week (there is flexibility on what days works best for the intern).

The internship pays approximately $1500 for the summer semester. The internship is paid hourly at a rate of 7.25 for 18 hours per week for the 12‑week program. Mileage is reimbursed for travel to Club sites as well.

Key Responsibilities
  • Resource Coordination:
    • Identify and connect families with community resources (e.g., mental health services, housing assistance).
    • Maintain a comprehensive resource database for staff and families.
  • Program Assistance:
    • Assist in developing and implementing social and emotional learning (SEL) programs and activities.
    • Facilitate group activities and workshops that enhance self‑esteem, empathy, and problem‑solving skills.
    • Provide individual behavior support and small group programming to Club members.
  • Family Engagement:
    • Help plan and host family engagement events and workshops.
    • Facilitate communication between staff, Club members, and families. Share information and resources related to child development and overall well‑being.
  • Staff Support:
    • Assist in staff training on SEL, child development, and mental health topics.
    • Support staff in implementing SEL strategies and addressing members’ needs.
  • Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Collect and analyze data on program outcomes and participant progress.
    • Assist in preparing reports and presentations to showcase program impact.
    • Help gather data for grant writing, funding, and reporting.
  • Administrative Support:
    • Provide administrative assistance, including scheduling appointments, answering phones, and data entry.
    • Help with the preparation of program materials and supply management.
  • Qualifications
    • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in social work.
    • Strong interest in youth development, mental health, and family engagement.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
    • Patience, empathy, and understanding of diverse backgrounds.
    • Must be 18 years or older.
    • Must pass a background check and fingerprint screening.
    • Must pass a drug test.
    • Must be able to provide three professional references.
    • Must be available at least 18 hours a week.
    • Must be available at least three times a week between the hours of 10 AM to 2 PM (the specific days are flexible).
