Primary RoleWork with school faculty and staff, students, parents, and community to plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling programs for the secondary campus. Counsel students to fully develop each student’s academic, career, personal, and social abilities and address students’ needs. This position supports students in grades 6-12.
Qualifications- Master’s degree in mental health or school counseling or related degree
- Valid Texas certified school counselor certificate or licensed professional counselor
- Two + years teaching experience preferred
- Three + years school counseling experience preferred
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
- Teach campus developmental guidance curriculum tailored to, but not limited to, Suicide Prevention, Bullying Prevention, Safe/Healthy Choices, Healthy Relationships, Anti-Victimization, and Substance Abuse
- Assist teachers in the teaching of guidance-related curriculum
- Assist in the development of Social and Emotional Learning activities and the overall program
- Collaborate with other staff members to aid individuals and groups of students to develop education plans
- Plan school guidance and counseling programs to ensure that they meet identified needs, priorities, state requirements, and program objectives
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the guidance program and individual activities and make changes based on findings
- Use technology effectively and efficiently to plan, organize, implement and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program
- Educate the school staff, parents, and community about the guidance program
- Create a referral process to help students and others use community resources
- Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant community members to enhance their work with students
- Provide counseling to individuals and small groups relative to their concerns
- Provide specific counseling related to crisis intervention when necessary
- Provide specific counseling as guided by student IEPs
- Work with teachers to resolve student issues interfering with school academics
- Maintain a communication system that effectively collects and disseminates student social/ emotional wellness information to other staff members as appropriate
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other school professionals and representatives of community
- Create and utilize an effective referral process for students who need special programs and services
- Develop new student welcome and orientation material and coordinate onboarding of new students
- Host 5th-grade transition orientation
- Serve on attendance and other committees as necessary
- Assist in master schedule creation, academic planning, student schedule changes, and final exam scheduling
- Guide students in selecting courses based on their goals and interests
- Support campus administrators with campus activities such as benchmark or standardized testing, field days, school rallies, etc.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in guidance and counseling area
- Compile, maintain, and file all required physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents
- Comply with all district and campus routines, regulations, and policies
- Maintain a positive and productive relationship with administrators
- Attend Professional Development throughout the year to stay up-to-date with research-based practices
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding information concerning students, parents, staff, and classroom incidents
- Adhere to ethical and legal standards and model behavior that is professional and responsible
- Participate in approved professional development to improve skills related to job assignment
- Follow NYOS standard procedures for communication, interaction, and discipline as outlined in the NYOS Staff Handbook
