Based at our site in Cramlington, Northumberland, the Process Safety Engineer plays a key role in ensuring the safety of our process operations on plant.

SummaryReporting to the Process Safety Manager, you will actively participate in and track hazard reviews and process safety risk assessments, providing expert technical input and practical guidance to support safe, reliable and compliant operations. This is a full‑time, site‑based position working Monday to Friday.
Responsibilities- Support compliance with COMAH Regulations, DSEAR 2002, ATEX and the process safety management system, including updating sections of the COMAH Safety Report.
- Assist in major accident hazard identification and risk assessment processes, including Haz 0‑7 studies, QRA, LOPA, SIL, OBRA etc.
- Provide process safety risk assessment input including selection, installation and operation of equipment and inspection/maintenance considerations.
- Monitor compliance with the site Hazardous Substance Consent (HSC) in terms of substance volume tracking.
- Review and develop process safety relevant procedures and contribute to creation/revision of other procedures as required.
- Contribute to site emergency response arrangements, especially emergency response ‘pre‑plans’.
- Involvement in the preparation and revision of permitting/licence documentation related to process safety such as the COMAH safety report, aspects of the EPR permit and hazardous substances consent issues, and monitor improvement actions.
- Prepare for interventions with regulatory authorities such as HSE, Local Authority and EA as required.
- Conduct workplace inspections, audits and investigations as required.
- Represent EHS at engineering handovers and modification reviews, participate in design reviews on engineering flow diagrams.
- Investigate issues and topics, prepare and present investigation reports and suggest possible actions.
- Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as chemical/process engineering (chartered membership desirable).
- Safety qualification desirable, e.g. NEBOSH Certificate/Diploma or willingness to work towards a process safety qualification.
- Demonstrable experience in a manufacturing/production environment.
- Understanding and appreciation of major accident legislation such as COMAH and ability to contribute to hazard identification and risk assessment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and develop practical solutions to process safety issues.
- Prioritisation and time‑management skills to balance active and reactive workloads.
- Competent with IT systems, especially Microsoft Office (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
